The
Craft Centre and Design Gallery recently sent local designer Samantha
Bryan into four primary schools to work with their Year 2 pupils. She
spent a day working in each of the selected schools where she introduced
her own work and inspirations to the children.
Samantha's
work provided the stimulus to launch children into creating their very
own 'flying machine'. Children were first asked to collect materials for
the project, things from everyday life, small bottles, boxes and containers,
buttons, sticks, fabric etc. They were then taught to explore and manipulate
the materials and were encouraged that they could construct art out of
objects that they would usually throw away. |

This was the first major series of workshops that the Craft Centre and Design Gallery had organised to promote and develop artistic appreciation and creativity within the wider community. This project was particularly directed at underprivileged primary schools with the intention of injecting creativity back into the school environment.
We are proud to be in the position to offer children the chance to work
directly with a practising artist, allowing them to benefit from such
a valuable experience. Teachers welcomed the event and the children were
thrilled to have such an opportunity, saying it was one of the best days
they had ever spent in school. |

Four
schools in total participated in this venture, the first of which was
the school that Samantha Bryan attended as a child:
Ravensthorpe
Infant and Nursery School The gallery invited each school to exhibit their pupil's finished sculptures, in a joint exhibition, which we hoped would introduce the children to a gallery environment where their own work could be appreciated. |
