Ceramic Showcase - Sheila Boyce
1st February - 31st April 2002

The chemistry of combining the most basic of natures resources, earth, fire and water has provided ceramist, Sheila Boyce with a life long challenge.

As a relatively new maker, the aim in developing her range of ceramics is to create smooth, tactile surfaces to encourage an urge to touch. Sheila describes these elegant spherical forms as 'touchy-feely' pieces.
"My imagination is triggered primarily from natures designs and in particular, those that are found around the beaches of the British Isles." Sheila looks at the spontaneous designs, forms, textures and colours left by the tide on deserted beaches. "It amazes me how many different designs can be found on one beach as the tide recedes. Each one a work of art in itself."
After undertaking a workshop with Jane Perryman in 1999, Sheila became hooked on the technique of burnishing and smoke firing as a means of simple decoration. Her work is hand built and press moulded using tile material. The forms are simple in shape, often spherical, inspired by the natural beauty of pebbles.
