The
inspiration for her work is drawn from life: people, architectural
features, found objects and natural forms. The work arises
from abstracting, developing and combining different aspects
of the natural and man-made world.
Her
work is beautifully composed using bone china and porcelain
clays. combining layering, inlay and carving techniques..
She creates plaster moulds within which her forms are cast.
The casting enables Penny to make very fine individual pieces.
The forms are then hand-carved through the layers of colour
and finely sanded to achieve an exquisite natural and smooth
'pebble' like quality.
The
primary aim of this delicate work is to explore the subtlety
of the hollow form. Penny creates variable areas of translucency
and carves the forms with acute detail to light and shade
making them as thin as possible. She occassionally uses the
addition of colour to create opaque areas paying great attention
to the intimate link between form and decoration.
