Hortense
Suleyman is a young French ceramicist who graduated from Camberwell
College of Arts in the summer of 2000. She is currently following an
apprenticeship with Edmund de Waal in his South London studio.
Since finishing her degree, Hortense has started using Limoges porcelain and glaze both in reduction and oxidisation. Her work has evolved in the last year with a broader use of carving which will inevitably become her trademark. For example, she may incorporate a thin carved line into thrown pieces to achieve an aesthetic, functional and tactile effect. When handling these pieces, the line can serve as a resting point for the thumb. Hortense explains, "Similarly, it is only when one feels a vessel or turns it upside down that a carved base is discovered. I therefore believe strongly that the ceramics should be held. The contrast between the smoothness of the glaze and the dryness of the base can then be enjoyed." A large selection of porcelain vessels by Hortense Suleyman will be on display in the Ceramic Showcase from 1st August until 31st October 2002. All pieces will be for sale and some items will be available to purchase through the Interest Free Credit Art Loan Scheme. |
