The
Ceramic Showcase is intended either as an introduction to a new potter
or fresh, new work from an already established potter. The showcase
is held four times a year and changes every two months, to explain the
work further and in more detail it is accompanied by technical information
and a short statement.

Lorraine
Ditchburn produces
a range of textured, porcelain vessels and bowls using the technique
of slip casting, a process more traditionally associated with industrial
production rather than craft activities. Lorraine therefore, employs
what is essentially an industrial process to produce objects which have
a hand crafted aesthetic.

The
driving force behind her work is the creation of surface texture which
she applies to simple, organically derived forms. Porcelain is magnificently
able to display delicate textures through it's ability to highlight
every nuance and surface detail. This bestows upon an object a tactility
which is immediately apparent to the onlooker. Most of her work is a
minimalist white and unglazed. Lorraine holds the belief that it is
the simpler things in life which give the most pleasure.

Lorraine draws inspiration from many sources which includes textiles, fashion design, nature, contemporary design, architecture and landscapes. Her work does not fit neatly into the realms of traditional ceramics and feels that this is largely due to the fact that she looks outside of this area for inspiration. Her current work has been greatly inspired by the intricately linen wrapped mummies found in ancient Egyptian tombs.
