David Ralston lives in Galloway, where markings in stone - in the rolling and varied landscape - go back to megalithic times. Intrigued by these and, working with the artistic use of precision and experimental engineering, he approaches stone with a forward-looking creative curiosity, as well as with knowledge of its natural presence and artistic history.  His stone sculptures explore a sense of presence behind the initial appearance of the stone’s shape. There is paradox in the regular shapes cut into such truly old material and in this realignment of nature, as stones link or ‘dance’ in other rhythms to those apparent in that first appearance. Sculptures created by reduction (the taking away of stone) become something else altogether, revealing other kinds of harmony.
