Sculpture Workshop
with Samantha Bryan

Tuesday 4th March at
Robin Hood Primary School
Recollection
3rd May - 26th July 2003

Samantha Bryan was invited to lead a sculpture workshop, organised by The Craft Centre & Design Gallery with children from a local junior school.
The school, Robin Hood Primary in Wakefield, West Yorkshire was eager to accept as there are very few opportunities of this nature open to children aged between 6 and 11 years.

The aim of the project was to introduce children to contemporary craft and to give them an opportunity to see their own work on display in a gallery setting.

The project is in support of the exhibition 'Recollection', which includes work by Samantha Bryan and eight other applied artists who take their inspiration from childhood memories or treasured items.

Samantha, who was assisted by the gallery's Educational Co-ordinator Janet Chin, showed the children her 'Fairy Sculptures' and explained how she makes them and how she gets her ideas.

Samantha makes intricate sculptures of domesticated fairies cleverly crafted from wire, leather, clay, wood, paper, brass and found bits and bats. She explained to the children that her job was to use her imagination and encouraged them to use theirs.

The children were asked to produce sculptures of their heroes from things that had been collected, such as bottles, lollipop sticks, fabric, string, leather, paper, foils, beads, pipe cleaners etc.

Children from three classes took part and either worked on their own or in groups of three. The results were outstanding with witty representations of the Queen, Scooby Doo, Elvis and pop heroes such as Gareth Gates, Britney Spears, Rachel from S Club and the rapper Nelly.

The sculptures will be on display at the gallery throughout the duration of the exhibition 'Recollection' which runs from 3rd May until 27th July 2003.

A group of children visited the exhibition opening along with their teacher, Miss Ramsey and their Head teacher, Mrs Kilburn.

Here they are pictured with the Educational Co-ordinator, Janet Chin and maker, Samantha Bryan.

The infants at Robin Hood Primary School are also represented in the exhibition.

They were asked to produce drawings inspired by everyday situations which were mounted as exhibition boards and some drawings have been used within the display cases as a backdrop for the jewellery.
