INFORMATION FOR DESIGNERS - HOW TO APPROACH THE GALLERY

The Craft Centre and Design Gallery works as an agency which means that we do not buy work outright. All work is promoted equally and on a commission basis. We rely on the commission on sales for general running costs and also to finance a lively exhibition programme.

What can a gallery offer you?

Galleries offer a committed selling environment and dedicated, knowledgable staff to help makers reach a wider public. Staff can afford to spend an hour with an indecisive customer or sort out any problems, leaving a designer time to make.

How to approach the gallery

In order to approach a gallery in a professional manner you will require an information package which you can send through the post. All information should be addressed to the Director, Hayley Walker.

Covering letter -
A short introduction and relevant details such as address and telephone number.

C.V. -
Your CV should include details of your art education, training, past, current and forthcoming exhibitions, retail outlets, grants etc. Technical information and an artists statement is also very helpful.

Visuals -
You can send slides, photographs, digital images on CD Rom or by Email with your name, a contact number, title and dimensions. If you have too much information, you can always number the visuals and provide the information on a separate sheet.

S.A.E. -
Always include a stamped self addressed envelope to ensure that your visuals are returned to you.

and Mo Fox

Some designers who repeat items, such as jewellers, may have a catalogue and pricelist.

Never turn up at a gallery without an appointment, if you want a gallery to treat you as a professional then you must act like one.

Other Galleries

There are many craft galleries established in the UK at present. They may appear to be the same, in that they all exhibit contemporary craft, but they may be set up differently.

There are private galleries, those funded by city councils and co-operatives.
