"The
Written Word"
3rd August - 30th October 2004
|
|
|
|
|
This is a showcase encompassing a group of ten diverse designers, each
using text as an individual design feature. This will be an exhilarating
exhibition presenting the power, potency and presence of the written
word evident through contemporary jewellery design.
|
|
|
|
The designers taking part are:
Nicola Becci, Anthony Blakeney, Karen Whiterod, Nick Hubbard, Marmalade,
Jenni Wilson,
Elizabeth Abbey, Clare Hillerby, Neil Wood and Daphne Krinos.

Nick
Hubbard is a well established jeweller using text as a descriptive,
humorous tool, manipulating wording from rhymes and storytelling.
Jenni Wilson also uses text in a humorous manner, bringing everyday
items and objects in to a playful yet precious form. Clare Hillerby
makes beautiful work in silver, oxidised silver, gold leaf and paper.
She effectively uses text as a way of mark making, as a contrast between
different materials and surface textures.
Neil Wood's work is plain, elegant and contemporary and the wording
, etched onto the silver can be particularly identifiable to the wearer.
Marmalade uses text as an identity feature similar to Neil Wood; it
is quirky, fun and affordable, with relevant nouns printed onto PVC
for the wearer to adorn.

Text
is particularly relevant to Nicola Becci as calligraphy, symbolism and
the Catholic Church heavily influence her design. To her, aesthetic
importance of a word is just as relevant as the meaning. This concept
is similar to that of Daphne Krinos who has created a one-off range
from steel, silver, paper, acetate and ribbon inspired by 'love related'
vocabulary.

Karen
Whiterod, Anthony Blakeney and Elizabeth Abbey use the written word
in a particularly romantic and poetic manner.

Karen
Whiterod uses quotes and poetry from newsprint on her large textured
pieces while Anthony Blakeney simply engraves the word 'love' into silver
rings, pendants and earrings often combined with a diamond - the traditional
stone to represent love. Finally, Elizabeth Abbey creates pretty resin
and silver jewellery using beautifully written but unrecognisable text
to enhance it's overall romantic and precious keepsake quality.
