Kate Schuricht completed a degree in Ceramics and Visual Art at the University of Brighton in 1996. The passage of time and the relationship with the past are strong influences in her work where her raku and stoneware ceramics explore ideas of containment and the rituals of collecting and placing special objects. The process of raku firing gives a unique variation to the surface, with a distinctive, random crackle and smokiness that makes each piece individual in its finish. Containers with their permanently bound lids or intricate fastenings draw us to touch and open these vessels which echo of the past. |

The pieces are intimately grouped with the contrast between the inside and outside emphasised by a change in glaze or texture. Kate applies glaze like layers of fabric to partly wrap the vessels, highlighting the qualities of the surfaces and the rough or smooth, matt or shiny finishes. A visual delight for everyone to enjoy. |
