Fascinated by industrial chimneys and their different shapes and designs, Kristen Godfrey has been able to interpret the urban landscape to produce large and medium scale, freestanding, tubular ceramic forms. These wonderful arrays of structures make dramatic compositions as they are displayed together and would enhance any contemporary space. Each piece is thrown stoneware with a white porcelain slip. Bands of overlapping glazes are then applied, initially to imitate the palette of colours from the skyline in varying hues of grey-blues and grey-greens. In Kristen’s latest work the warm natural shades of earth, wood and autumnal leaves are evident in subtle beiges, browns and buff glazes. Since graduating from the University of Wolverhampton with a degree in 3D Design Kristen has been steadily working on techniques of glazing and reduction firing to create the colours and textures she desires. Textures on the outer surfaces of the pieces are largely inspired by elements of erosion and pollution and dramatise the compositions further. Kristen’s next step in developing this superb collection of works is to explore the functionality of the product. The forms lend themselves to adaptation for up-lighters or indoor/outdoor water features, all exciting developments for this inspirational ceramicist. “Powerful and striking works to delight audience after audience”
