Richard Spare is a highly talented printer. He spent most of his early career as a printmaker collaborating with and editioning work for artists such as David Hockney, jasper Johns, Keith Haring and Howard Hodgkin. Over the last ten years, Richard has been developing his own work, colourful drypoint etchings derived from his personal and domestic life. |

"I
enjoy the almost sculptural quality involved in working a plate and
particularly like the rich, velvety quality of line produced by drypoint,
which, in combination with vibrant colour, I use for my prints."
The garden behind Richard's studio, a converted coach house filled with antique presses, proves a rich source of inspiration, the garden plants, flowers and vessels are a starting point for much of his work. "Unfortunately I don't have green fingers myself, or know many latin names but I adore flowers." |

Richard
spent some time in America, whilst there he visited a lot of museums.
He was struck by the simplicity of line used in the paintings of Matisse
and this is reflected in his current work.
"On arrival in a new part of the world, I always find out where the best florist shop is." In addition to his flower subjects, Richard's imagery also stems from his observations whilst on holiday, such as boats in Cornwall. The rich, vibrant colours are inspired by his travels to India and Nepal. |
