Ceramic Showcase
Rebacca Appleby

8th April - 30th July 2006

Rebecca Appleby was educated at Edinburgh College of Art where she gained a Ceramics degree. Since then she has continually produced art for numerous gallery exhibitions and art fairs nationwide, including the ‘Manchester Art Fair' at Urbis, ‘Glasgow Art Fair' and ‘Battersea Art Fair' in London . She has also completed a large number of private commissions including creating work for a city centre penthouse, a stately home in Edinburgh and the BBC new head office in Leeds .

Her ceramic vessels continue to explore the interest she has in form and surface. Inspiration comes from sculptors Gordon Baldwin and Richard Serra, with painters Cy Twombley, Tapies and Robert Rauchenberg also inspiring her.

Her most recent body of work has come from research into the aesthetics and history of Japanese packaging combined with an interest in the structure and order that ‘boxes' represent. Her final Ceramic forms are derived from the flattening of boxes and other packaging, revealing the net. This is then reconstructed into a paper maquette whereby Rebecca sculpts ideas for the finished clay forms.

The surface of the work explores the theme of the diary, whereby extracts of text and expressive mark making are applied to the vessels creating exquisite areas of interest. Her subtle use of colour with areas of contrast make the collection unique and refreshing.

A fantastic showcase of work from this local talent which mustn't be missed.
