An
exciting and charming exhibition of applied art by nine female contemporary
designer-makers. The exhibition aims to rekindle childhood memories
and to remind people of treasured items. The designers take their inspiration
from 'old loved things', from personal memories, fables, dreams and
wishes.
Each piece, which is special and collectable, tells an enchanting tale of sentimentality or naivety through the ingenious use of techniques such as collage, embroidery and assemblage, and through the subtle use of materials, such as fabric, thread, found objects or papier-mache. |

The
select group which includes new and well established makers is comprised
of
Julie Arkell, Janet Bolton, Jennifer Brampton, Samantha Bryan, Lucy Casson, Adele Christie, Victoria Lindo, Nina Mankin and Linda Miller. |

Victoria
Lindo calls herself a 3D maker and illustrator as she creates stuffed
animals and collage embroideries made from collections of precious bits
and pieces.
Julie Arkell and Nina Mankin like working with scraps of fabric, wool and paper to create their narrative pieces. Jennifer Brampton uses remnants as inspiration but recreates her quirky pieces in paper, clay and wire. Lucy Casson is well known for her cleverly constructed tin sculpture, she explains"My childhood was spent constucting things out of jumble sale finds and bits lying around." She has just continued on this theme with great success. |

Samantha
Bryan also looks to everyday life for her inspiration but amusingly
she becomes lost in the imaginary world of fairies. Samantha's extraordinary
objective is to provide everything that a fairy would require during
it's daily existence through "Brains Fairy Aiding Inventions". |

As
part of the gallery's increasing educational programme, The Craft
Centre & Design Gallery has collaborated with a local school,
Robin Hood Primary in Wakefield. The children were asked to produce
a collection of drawings and sculptures to be featured in the exhibition.
The infants have provided drawings inspired by everyday situations
which will be mounted as exhibition boards and some drawings will
be used within the display cases as a backdrop for the jewellery. |

A
wonderful jewellery showcase, entitled Drawing
from Childhood will complement this slightly eccentric exhibition.
