Richard studied painting at Maidstone College of Art from 1971 – 1974. Since then he has continued to produce his own work, becoming intensely involved in etching and drypoint printing processes. His early career was spent collaborating and editioning work for such prominent artists as David Hockney, Jasper Johns, Keith Haring and Howard Hodgkin. Richard has exhibited widely throughout the UK , and has proved to be very popular at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, to which he has successfully submitted work for several years running. This is Richard's second solo print exhibition here at The Craft Centre and Design Gallery and his new prints will be a pleasure to showcase at this time. Concentrating solely on his own work now, Richard's prints take inspiration from nature and travel. The beautiful garden he has designed at his studio provides a rich source of inspiration. Filled with hollyhocks, foxgloves, poppies and wisteria, it is a small haven for wildlife and is ever-changing with the seasons. Richard also explores other imagery, especially whilst on his yearly visits to Cornwall . This is where most of his boating imagery is derived from. Travels further afield to destinations such as India and Nepal have inspired the rich colours Richard uses in his prints. Richard manages to maintain an unusual velvety quality with the drypoint prints, a technique that has been developed over many years. The prints are all then hand coloured after they have through the printing press. This delicate hand colouring means that no two prints are ever the same. A wonderfully inspirational print exhibition for those with a taste for colour and adventure. |
