'Rie Tsuruta Ceramic Showcase'
24th Jan - End of April 2009
A wonderfully subtle collection of ceramics with sumptuous colours, highlighting this makers expertise in this field.
Rie came from Japan to study ceramics in the UK. In 2007 she graduated from the University of Brighton with a BA Hons in Wood, Metals, Ceramics and Plastics. Returning to education as an international student has given her the opportunity to stay in the UK. However this place and time are limited for her, as she will return to her country someday.
Rie’s work is concerned with this sense of limitation. She has focused on the landscapes of the South Downs in East Sussex where she is now living. Current works are thrown and moulded porcelain bowls, with forms and surfaces that are inspired by her impressions of the landscapes. The many different glazes are used to illustrate the various seasons. Moreover, Rie thinks that porcelain itself is a medium that expresses cultural mix.
