For the past 38 years we have been championing contemporary craft in the vibrant city of Leeds to shine a spotlight on independent makers and their small businesses from across Yorkshire and the rest of the UK.  Through an exciting seasonal exhibition programme we highlight the skills behind handmade and share their inspiring stories.  Bringing these amazing collections of contemporary craft together under one roof has created a haven for many visitors to escape the stresses of daily life & create mindful experiences.  Please help us keep the gallery and the hundreds of small businesses we support alive by donating what you can so we can continue to keep bringing the very best of contemporary craft to you and help us and these creative industries thrive.

    Education

As a registered charity The Craft Centre and Design Gallery fulfils several objectives in our quest to be an invaluable resource for educational institutes and their students.
Over the years we've tailored various workshops, demonstrations, lectures and educational material to meet the needs of the next generation of designer makers.

While we really enjoyed hosting and organising this variety of events, in recent years we've focussed our energies on providing a fantastic range of in house information in order to inform and educate.  We've found that this programme has been really successful in facilitating the passing of information to a really wide audience of both customers and visitors alike.

For the majority of designers on display we have printed information, covering things like processes and inspirations available on request.  While for those designers participating in exhibitions this information is displayed alongside the work with a 'designer at work' image to highlight that each piece is made by hand.  In addition to this there are handouts available in the gallery covering the basics of jewellery making, printmaking and ceramics*

    * Designer information and handouts can be read free of charge in the gallery but a nominal charge of 10p is made should you want to take the information away.

    Group Visits

Throughout the year we welcome a diverse range of students and community groups who use the centre as both a tool for research and respite.  Should you wish to arrange a group visit please contact the gallery and we'll be happy to arrange a mutually convenient time.

If you're a student wishing to take photographs for study on your visit then please download a photography permission form.  Please book an appointment via email and bring the completed form with you to your appointment.  We'll then be able to ensure you get the best out of your visit using us as a research resource.

    Work experience

We're happy to consider applications from students studying a relevant Craft subject (at degree level) looking to gain work experience in a gallery environment.  Initially we ask that interested parties contact us via email outlining what they hope to gain from the placement, why they have selected The Craft Centre and Design Gallery, proposed dates and an up to date CV.  If we're satisfied with the initial application we'd invite the candidate in for an informal chat to give them the chance to meet the team and get a feel for the gallery so we can determine that we are able to fully meet their needs.

The gallery regrets we are only able to offer one placement per year.
