Jane Ormes & Julia Ogden

2nd July - 29th October 2016

Group print exhibition with Jane Ormes and Julia Ogden.

Whimsical and decorative prints by Jane Ormes and charming screen printed works by Yorkshire printmaker Julia Ogden are showcased in this beautiful group exhibition sure to brighten up any interior.  Julia’s depiction of woodlands, birds and changing seasons are a source of inspiration for her, meanwhile Jane’s inspirations come from a wild imagination involving animals in comical scenarios.

A word from Jane:

"My screen prints reflect my take on the world.  I produce playful, colourful images, often involving animals in absurd situations.  I like to think that these creatures all have a secret life that we know nothing about.  I keep a notebook to jot down unusual names or lyrical phrases as these can often lead to an idea but it's more likely that i will be inspired by a story or situation that tickles me.  Drawing, patterns and textures are all integral to my work as well as large areas of flat bold colour which can be achieved by the screen printing process which reflect my background in printed textiles."

Did you know:  Jane once spotted one of her Christmas cards on the Royal desk during the Queen's speech at Christmas.

A word from Julia:

"I am a painter and printmaker living in Hebden Bridge, where the woodlands, birds and changing seasons are a constant source of inspiration.  I grew up in Brighouse, so Hebden Bridge was just a short trip away.  With fond memories I chose to settle here on my return from studying down south.  I studied illustration at Edinburgh College of Art and then a Masters at Brighton University because I loved making pictures and telling stories. I still do.  When I left University I concentrated on painting.  My work was published both nationally and internationally.  I returned to printmaking and drawing about four years ago.  I now do both with a common thread running through them of home and nature.

To make my prints I begin with a pen drawing.  I make these by looking at light and shade and adding delicate lines over the shadows, all in biro pen. This is in then transferred onto a silk screen and I hand print it.  Screen printing is one of my chosen mediums as I love colour and it enables me to explore this.  Due to the delicate lines I use the results can be a bit unpredictable, but I feel it is worth the worry when I produce a subtle screen print.

I have also started exploring shapes as a backdrop to my images and feel these add a block of colour to complete the print."

Did you know:  Julia's paintings were internationally published by Washington Green Publishing.  She also teaches adults and children art as well as pursuing her own art practice.  She currently run workshops, children's art clubs and craft parties from her studio in Hebden Bridge.
