For the past 38 years we have been championing contemporary craft in the vibrant city of Leeds to shine a spotlight on independent makers and their small businesses from across Yorkshire and the rest of the UK.  Through an exciting seasonal exhibition programme we highlight the skills behind handmade and share their inspiring stories.  Bringing these amazing collections of contemporary craft together under one roof has created a haven for many visitors to escape the stresses of daily life & create mindful experiences.  Please help us keep the gallery and the hundreds of small businesses we support alive by donating what you can so we can continue to keep bringing the very best of contemporary craft to you and help us and these creative industries thrive.

    Gin Durham

    16th January – 30th April 2016

Solo showcase by ceramicist Gin Durham.

A truly enchanting collection of sculptural animal ceramics inspired by traditions of folklore, fairy stories and nursery rhymes.  Since Gin can remember, she has been fascinated by stories and how they have endured the test of time, repeated by generations.  Her hope is that her work in turn, will have the power to trigger associations, images and stories in the mind of the viewer.  For many years Gin has enjoyed creating and making; through from her first disciplines of illustration and graphic design to now working with clay.  Her ceramic practice has been established since graduating with a 1st Class Degree from Bucks New University in 2011.

Clay, for her is a rewarding material, one with which she is forging a lasting relationship, enhanced by firm grounding of mixed media and design experience.  Drawing and illustrating has always formed the basis for each three dimensional piece.  All sculptures are individually hand built in porcelain or stoneware, incorporating textile impressed elements.  Each piece is informed by the rich historical value of the ceramic figurine combined with the lace surface finish to enhance ideas of tradition with a contemporary twist of humour.

"I am a designer-maker and for as long as I can remember I have derived an enormous amount of pleasure and satisfaction from the pure acts of creating and making.  For a number of years I have worked as a graphic designer, project manager and artist.  My ceramic practice has been established since graduating in 2011.  Ceramics, for me is an exciting and rewarding material, one with which I am forging a lasting relationship, enhanced by my firm grounding of mixed media and graphic experience."
